CRUSHED BY THE FUTURE

Seoul (South Korea) - June, 2024

South Korea is one of the most technologically advanced and wealthiest countries in the world. But behind the lights that illuminate its skyscrapers lies a reality that remains in the shadows. Among its 51 million inhabitants, 7.7 million live below the poverty line. The elderly, crushed by a society that grew too fast, are the most affected: 38% live in poverty, the highest rate among OECD countries.

During my work in June 2024, I visited several makeshift camps under the highway that connects Songnam, a satellite city of Seoul, to the capital. I then spent several days with Father Vincenzo Bordo, an Italian missionary of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, who opened the House of Anna in 1993. The center provides over 500 meals a day to those in need and carries out many parallel activities to help the homeless and street children.
